To find a right broker for share dealing, we spent seven months and hundreds of hours of assessing 12 different share dealing brokers based in the UK. Here, we will focus on two brokers and compare IG vs Interactive Investor.

Our comparison begins with the fees charged for dealing shares in the UK and being a client. The two main charges to focus on include the cost to place each trade alongside the monthly, quarterly, or annual management fee charged (varies depending on the type and size of your portfolio). We researched both to provide a single star rating for cost. Both IG and Interactive Investor are rated 4.50 stars.

Further breaking down costs, we analyzed four different trading scenarios. For all four scenarios, we are assuming a £30,000 portfolio for custody fees.

Scenario 1 - If you make 1 trade a month, or 12 per year, the fees with IG wold be £96 and the fees with Interactive Investor would be £119.8.

Scenario 2 - 36 trades per year, or 3 trades per month. IG charges £288 and Interactive Investor charges £287.76.

Scenario 3 - If you make 10 trades a month, or 120 per year, the fees with Interactive Investor wold be £622.92 and the fees with IG would be £600.

Scenario 4 - 240 trades per year, or 20 trades per month. IG charges £1200 and Interactive Investor charges £1101.72.

Account charges aside, we can now compare features and tools investors want in their share dealing accounts. Access to the investments is important, and Interactive Investor supports ISA, ISA - Junior, SIPP and Spread Betting while IG supports ISA, SIPP and Spread Betting. Also, some investors require a high-quality charting experience, so the number of drawing tools and total technical indicators made available, as well as stock alerts, are considered. Interactive Investor trails IG by 19 total charting tools, with IG offering 19 and Interactive Investor offering 0. IG boasts an offering of 28 different indicators (for example, moving averages) compared to Interactive Investor's 11 available indicators. IG alongside Interactive Investor offer basic stock alerts. Lastly, for researching mutual funds while share dealing, being able to view a research report can be helpful. Interactive Investor makes fund research reports available to clients, while IG does not.

Overall, between IG and Interactive Investor, IG is the winner.
